ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Summer Crawford is an American illustrator from Baltimore, Maryland. Summer graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in the spring of 2024 with a BFA in illustration. Summer is known for her highly detailed digital illustrations, whimsical works of pink, green and purple outlined in fine black lines. These illustrations explore interior spaces and the individuals that inhabit them, as well as the smallest, sweetest and most often overlooked details and moments of everyday life.
My childhood bedroom was pink, with a warm light, and covered in sparkling fabrics and small
trinkets, with the trinkets still sitting around my desk and bedroom shelves as I write this. I feel
as though this description of my childhood bedroom is a great introduction into my body of
work. In my largely pink and purple illustrations, I explore detailed and decorated bedroom
spaces that I feel mimic my childhood bedroom, often looking at the space around me, as well as
at photographs of lived in 90s and early 2000s teenage bedrooms for inspiration. I am heavily
inspired by the small details that make up a space, and take inspiration from the smallest things
such as the button that fell on my bedroom floor, the glitter stickers on my bedroom mirror, and
the small cat figurine on my bookshelf covered in a blanket of dust. My childhood bedroom
plays a great role in my work, as well as my interests as a child. My work imagery often includes
not only interior spaces, but also mermaids, cats, and paper dolls. My primary focus in my work
is on capturing detail and embellishments in a whimsical manner, and creating work that allows
for you to notice something new within it each time you look at it. I enjoy making works that
capture the smallest details in life in a whimsical way.
